Everyone’s favorite Parisian, Supe, aka Le Team Manager, let’s LRG into his studio for some black book sessions. Black books have served as the traditional sketch book for writers since the first days of graff and Supe has been at them since he was first introduced to graffiti. He has been painting in the streets since the early 90′s and over the past years has begun to bring his work into the galleries, most recently with Lieu 37 in Paris. Supe continuesly produces many zines each year and a limited edition book “Le Team Manager” was released through Classic last year. Along with Diego, Supe is a founding member of FMK crew.

As described by Michael and Chris: Kill ‘Em With Kindness is a philosophy. It is a way to live your life, a profound expression of individuality and a reaction to the cruelness of the cold world that surrounds us. A wormhole to the past and a jump to new heights of the imagination, killing them not with savagery but with the warmth and profundities of the human heart. This concept was the starting point for Michael Petow & Chris Petersen’s upcoming artshow at Ironlak LA. Based on conversations between the two friends and fellow artists, they have created a body of work built around their experiences and philosophies on life.
Chris Petersen has created a new series of work fusing techniques from the engraving masters of the past with those of contemporary street artists. Inspired by the indelible window “scribes” that thrive in Los Angeles, he uses the raw technique of carving into glass to push the medium to its breaking point. Chris brings his own style and flavor of imagery into the mix, showing a brief glimpse into the visions of his psyche. His work allows a second glance at the fleeting images which melt into our subconscious on a daily basis.

Michael Petow’s recent series of work for Kill ‘Em With Kindness fuses his past work of organic abstract patterns with universal messages from his personal dreamscapes. His work is influenced by the psychological theories of Carl Jung and communication with the unconscious mind. Mike’s new body of work gives the viewer a deeper insight into the nature of his reality. His highly intricate and detailed paintings use patterns and messages weaving together to form nebula like compositions. There is a visible connection with his past body of work but this series breaks the boundaries of what his art was, redefining what it is.

So Ummm, Yeah, Alex Pardee has a God damned 3D Animation web Series on the WB???? And it’s pretty fuckin’ awesome!!!!
Here’s the synopsis off the WB site: “Chadam lives as the “chosen one” in the hyper-stylized and exaggerated metropolitan island city of Vulture. His power of imagination is strong enough to physically change his environment and, therefore, his world … to save it from evil. The series finds Chadam in a place of refuge where he and others have retreated to plan their attack against a serial killer known as Viceroy. Chadam is a 3D animated web series from artist Alex Pardee and produced by Jace Hall.”

A close affiliate of ours going by the handle ‘Sofles’ is on his grind right now people! If you don’t know about this artist already you definitely should. He’s been swiftly making moves to solidify his place in the Graffiti, Street, Graphic and Fine art scenes throughout the world for a while now, with much success. You can check him rocking a pin up character in our last Read The Label promo video…
Ironlak and Bull and Bear are proud to present the South Australian debut of Russell Fenn aka Sofles, with a four-day exhibition in the heart of Adelaide city.
Notorious graffiti figure. Prodigious talent. Sofles has been both reviled and embraced by the media over his ten-year career, which began as a graffiti artist in Brisbane, Australia. After a well-publicized conviction in 2009, Sofles burst onto the scene with various sold-out exhibitions, collaborations with artists such as Anthony Lister, Ben Frost and Revok, and contracts with the likes of Red Bull, Myer, Adidas, and Toohey’s.
Returning from a tour of New York and Los Angeles, Sofles has chosen Adelaide for his first interstate exhibit, with new works on canvas featuring his signature mash up of aerosol, acrylics and oils, rendering evocative imagery in explosive colour. The progression from graffiti to canvas was a natural one, explains Sofles.
“Not much has changed, really. I’m painting every day, using the same tools, applying the same techniques, to a different platform, with a different audience. The work is finer, more considered, but my graffiti influence has been really well received.”
Sofles imagery is wide and varied, with collages of mind-bending abstraction melting into intricate form, perfect snapshots of the artist’s wild imagination. Sofles’ ability to create depth and detail with aerosol is unmatched, and combined with his bold use of colour renders pieces so distinctive they have firmly set Sofles reputation as one of Australia’s most watched contemporary artists.
This not-to-be missed exhibition runs at the Bull & Bear bar and restaurant from 6pm Thursday October 7th until Sunday October 10th. For more details, and to follow Sofles’ work please visit http://www.sofles.com/.
So, this young verbalist is already on Young Money and I’m sure some really bad pop tunes are about to be released under his name but check out his natural insane talent. I’m sort of predicting a Cam’Ron, Mase route for this young man, in that ever since the hungry Children Of The Corn beginnings the emphasis upon growing their artistry and or doing records outside the current formula quickly diminished… Ultimately, Leaving them some of the most uninteresting and in my opinion, least talented rappers spitting today. But I really hope not, Cory Gunz is one of the best all around Rappers I’ve heard in the last 15 years. His patterns, delivery, conceptual and pure braggin right based content is somewhere else! I think you’ll be seeing a lot of this kid in the near and distant future.Oh and he’s Peter Gunz’ son… Get familiar:

His art speaks for itself and he really needs no introduction…. This mans work is legendary! The master of 3D lettering since way back Mirko Reisser A.K.A. DAIM! We salute you sir! We scattered a couple quotes we liked from his website amongst some of our favorite pieces.
“I started in 1989. I was 17 and I started with some friends of mine. I didn’t know any graffiti writers at that time, so I just started going out and doing stuff. After three months, we got caught, and I had to pay my fine. I had to work the whole summer holidays just to pay it off.”
“My influence comes form the early Hamburg kings like Skener and Jase, but also Loomit and the FBI Crew”
“I was also really influenced by Dali, MC Escher and Van Gogh”
“I have absolutely no influence from comics so I wasn’t used to making a fat black line around everything. I always came from the direction to make everything with light and shade. And after awhile I thought I could apply that to letters. But it took some time. I started to go in this direction in ‘91.”
“A lot of people think that when you are young you do your graffiti and then you should become an ‘artist’; I think that’s stupid.”
“I believe all inspiration begins in nature. There are all shapes, colors, patterns etc. In nature, you just have to keep your eyes open.”
“I think that instead of taking pieces of history, artists have to just go off on their own and make their own history”
“I draw everything by hand. I only use a pencil and Copic art markers for my sketches.”
“Working with broad brushstrokes is much more interesting to me, especially as a counterpoint to the world of computers, where everything is getting more perfect and clean every day.”
“Doing everything by hand has the advantage that you understand every step. It takes longer, but it gives you the feeling that you understand what you’re doing. A computer relieves you of a lot of the work, but it often takes away the possibility to trace each and every step.”
When you do graffiti, you have to start with typography. You can make a lot strange things with your letters, but a D still has to be a D.”
“I believe that someone who writes only legally cannot grasp the whole spirit of graffiti”
“Show respect, be true to yourself, and always wear a mask when painting.”
Daim in Hamburg… An excerpt from the 2008 Documentary “bomb it”
Some anonymous DJ group believed by me to be based in Britain or Australia? And I also believe Calvin Harris is somehow involved or something, maybe???
All I know is I can’t wait to flat black my Prius and throw this joint in the deck while the chick I just picked up at an art show has a rush of approval over her face and a smile that says she’s craving something… For real. Well made Feel good music. Enjoy

‘Kazuki Takamatsu is a Japanese artist whose world is coming out of a fairy tale. But this fairy tale is not like the others. Dark and violent stories where floating melancholic childish figures are either in despair either in possession of lethal killing machines. Little melancholic lolitas posing with innocence create an atmospheric mystic world. Kazuki Takamatsu mixes traditional and modern techniques. On the one hand his works are gouache paintings (1) depicting three-dimensional objects and figures, whilst on the other hand he uses “Depth Map” (2) a technique where every pixel on the object he paints is a shade of gray that is proportional to its distance from the viewer. The match of these two techniques give a real sense of surrealism and astonishing depth. – yatzer

(1) ‘The method of mixing watercolor pigment with an opaque white pigment in a watercolor vehicle (made with gum arabic) is traditionally referred to as gouache. Gouache (pronounced “gwash”) comes from the Italian aguazzo, for mud. Gouache is ideal for illustration and photoreproduction. Gouache paintings are typically done on hot pressed papers or smooth art boards, since the paint imparts most of the texture and these surfaces help to create a perfectly flat paint film. Tinted papers are also more commonly used, since the tint is easily covered wherever desired, but lends a pleasing background hue in unpainted areas.

(2) ‘Shadow/Depth mapping or projective shadowing is a process by which shadows are added to 3D computer graphics. This concept was introduced by Lance Williams in 1978, in a paper entitled “Casting curved shadows on curved surfaces”. Since then, it has been used both in pre-rendered scenes, in realtime, even in many console and high-end PC games. Shadow mapping is used by Pixar’s RenderMan, and likewise, shadow mapping has been used in such films as Toy Story. Shadows are created by testing whether a pixel is visible from the light source, by comparing it to a z-buffer or depth image of the light source’s view, stored in the form of a texture.’

Kazuki Takamatsu was born in 1978 and graduated from the Tohoku University of Art and Design.

This is another artist we’re really feelin’ over here at Read The Label. Blaine Fontana is currently working and residing on Portland, OR as a full time fine artist, illustrator and graphic designer. Blaine has done work with Lineage Gallery, Upper Playground, FELT racing, The Lab 101 Gallery, Distinction Gallery, Keep A Breast, Ocean Pacific, SCION Installation Art Tour, TOYOTA, KID ROBOT, NIKE and Scribble Theory Gallery. Here’s a pretty solid but brief discription of Mr. Fontana via his bio on www.whatisblik.com “Blaine’s interests and inspiration come from world folklore and myth, ’60s design books, the animal kingdom, Japanese print composition and his back yard and upbringing.” He also manages his design studio with creative partner and wife, Eugenie Jolivett, creating branding packages, catalogs, web design, home furnishing products and interior design soliutions. I’m sure you’ll all be able to quickly see how talented this man is from just the few pics we’ve posted below but you should definitley go check his online Gallery and store out A.S.AP… Check Blaine’s site out here: www.blainefontana.com and then head over to see his posts on IdN’s www.society6.com

Ok we just got put up on this amazing artist by our close aphilliates @ HELL YEAH MAGAZINE . His name is Dalton Ghetti and we have a feeling you’ll be hearing it more and more in the next few years! We’re not going to get too far into the details about this man, as Hell Yeah already did a good job of that. What I have found out is that he is a quite talented, inspiring and original Sculpture and Carpenter with 25 years of work under his belt. He was born in Brazil and now works out of Connecticut? These pencil carvings are absolutely insane! The steady hand, time, dedication and meticulous attention to detail he enlists to pull these off is astounding. Here is a couple of examples of what we’re so amped on and why we had to share. After your interest is peaked, go see the full post over @ HELL YEAH’s BLOG. Keep in mind that these are all carved out of the wood and Graphite of a normal sized pencil….

I can’t speak highly enough about this incredibly talented artist that I have a lot of admiration for; Micah James. In my opinion, Mr James is the essence of a Rappers Rapper. An all around GREAT emcee who definitely deserves to be doing this for a living. I’ve had the Honor of Recording and performing with Micah for a couple years now and he never ceases to amaze me. Below I’ve posted a link for his first official mixtape, demo or whatever you wanna call it, as he says. I’ve barely had a chance to digest the whole thing (and I’ve listened to it quite a few times now) as it’s an ample serving of some serious audio nutrition. Some great original production on here from Ro Blvd. & Bombay and some classically fresh instrumental choices including some really unpredictable joints like The Cure‘s “All Cats are Grey” and the Aphex Twins’ “Bbydhyonchord” . I know you’re gonna dig this if you give it a good listen, whoever you are. In an email he sent me with this link he very humbly stated; ” I listened to it from start to finish and I gotta say, I’m not ashamed of it. I’ll let you be the judge, though.” and my response to him and all of you is that this collection of music is emphatically fresh and needs to be owned by anyone who likes music at all. The Street Installations of Joshua Allen Harris

“I Guess this is where I came in. To tell you the story of an unlucky guy who fell in love with a hole in the ground. A ghost haunting his own grave…” – Gary Oldman as Jack Grimaldi One of my favorite voiceover lines.
So here’s the first spotlight on one of my favorite Filmaker’s; Peter Medak. I’ve seen what I believe to be his first notable film, “ The Ruling Class ” but only once, a couple years ago and I always wanted to watch it again. Kind of freaky old flick where Peter O’toole, Plays a man who believes he’s Jesus and Jack the Ripper? While working on a bunch of British and American TV projects (that I’m not familiar with), he released a pretty good comedy with some Monty Pithon affiliates “ The Odd Job” and an ill ghost movie with George C. Scott, “Changeling” (Not that Eastwood crap, this was around 80’ or 81’), a comedic gay version of Zorro (that I’ve heard actually aint half bad) and a not so great philosophical drama with a great cast. Finally, on to my favorites, in this already tireless and potent visionaries body of work… The early 90’s Medak could do no wrong! Critics might not agree but he then proceeded to drop three of my all time favorite films back to back to back! In 1990, he put out “The Krays”, an excellent for the time, British gangster flick / Drama based on a true story of two infamous Brothers who ran London’s underworld in the 50’s and 60’s. In 1991 he dropped another Based on a true story joint about an infamous Capital Punishment trial in Great Brittan; “Let Him Have It”. This is one of the best drama’s I’ve ever seen and makes me cry every time I see it (No Homo). None of these films garnered huge monetary success accept maybe “The Ruling Class” which is what I believe made Medak continue a string of not so notable TV projects (accept maybe an episode he did of The Wire) but they definitely became some of my favorite films period.
The Medak film I wanted to post the first link for is Let Him Have It which is his masterpiece in my opinion. However the film I did post a great MU link for below was released in 1993, is a Crime / Drama / Neo Noir / Thriller, stars Gary Oldman and is called Romeo Is Bleeding. In one of Oldman’s best and few leading roles, he is disturbingly good as a corrupt NY detective. I’m very partial to these fast moving Crime stories and fanatical about almost every original noir film of the 40′s and 50′s (some of my favorites; Kiss Me Deadly, Murder My Sweet, The Big Sleep, Where The Sidewalk Ends, The Racket, Dead End, The Third Man, The Maltese Falcon, etc…). Maybe that’s why I’m so into this one but damn is the acting from everyone so on point ! Supporters such as Juliette Lewis, Roy Schieder, Annabella Sciorra, Michael Wincott and the incomparable female villain played eerily well by Lena Olin add so much to the films obvious homage to the Noir era (i.e.; the recycled plot and main emphasis on the unforgettable and definitely off-kilt characters of Jack and everyone he comes in contact with). Expertly directed by Medak and the D.P. Dariusz Wolski (who went on to do such films as ; The Crow, Dark City, The Mexican, Eagle Eye and is now doing the cinematography on Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland) did an amazing job and it seams like he really found a lot of his style and vision on this film. The story flows and intertwines quite well, other than a scene at the courthouse which defies logic and drops the ball completely. The rest of the movie is so good (specifically Oldman and Olin’s performances) that I can completely dismiss this scene as an end to a means and/or possibly an homage to the screwball plots of those before mentioned genre defining films.
Peter Medak is a personal hero of mine and a man who created some damned fine film and aint done yet. Let me know what you think?
Below I posted a Megaupload link for the film Romeo Is Bleeding… This one’s for the self-destructive hopeless romantic in all of you, please enjoy it.

Vol.’s 1 & 2 of Bob’s favorite 95′ Rap Releases:
So we started out watching the trial in suspense while B.I.G. was blowin up like the World Trade. We started picking up the pieces from the Northridge quake, had the Million Man March, the midwest heat wave, the introduction of the DVD and we lost Eazy-E. Biggie ended the year with the number one and number three rap singles in the country, Usual Suspects dropped one of the greatest twist endings in film history and then they found him not guilty…

I made toooooo many mixes for this crazy year in Rap releases and I’ll be droppin em’ sporadically but here’s the first two. If you didn’t listen to rap in the mid to late nineties, in a way, I envy you. Because you now have the chance to experience this section of times great artistic contributions with virgin ears. Download it and go back like car seats and parolees.
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. We had a bright eyed pre- , hummer on the slide, Slick Willie just startin to run the show. The first genetically engineered fruit was approved for sale, O.J. hopped in that Bronco, Tonya Harding went for gold the good old American way and The Northridge quake rocked The San Fernando Valley. Da Brat just barely topped the 69 boyz timeless masterpiece “Tootsie Roll” , giving her the number one rap single in the country “Funkdafied”. Meanwhile, a young Bob was entering his teens and busy writing graffiti and falling in love with girls and Hip Hop music. I put together a playlist of what should have been in your walkman’s and boombox’s circa 1994. It was hard to narrow this down to 70 or so tracks even, since there were so many great records that year. I’m posting the CD size Vol.1 right now but I’ll come back and drop some more once I post some of the other years. The 95′ to 98′ mix’s are going to be deadly… Relax, reminisce and take a journey back to a great year in good rap music.

In late 2006, the Hip Hop duo U-N-I and producer Ro Blvd began working on a project, though circulated outside of ‘norman’ industry channels and vever on CD, has catapulted U-N-I into the position of being one of the country’s fastest rising musical acts and leaders of the LA new school of Hip Hop. Now U-N-I(comprised of Y-O and Thurzday) release a deluxe edition of their critically acclaimed instant classic entitled A Love Supreme 2.0. The reworking of the entire project featurs five brand new tracks including the ‘Land of Kings’ remix with Bun B. To sweeten the package, A Love Supreme 2.0 comes with a full length DVD(Details Below). The U-N-I has created such a buzz that they have been signed to Los Angeles mega agency ICM who are booking the group into a 30 city US tour in the spring of 2010 with major festival appearances coming for the summer season.
I have a sneaking suspicion that people of all makes and models will be in to this one! Get it for free here. What up RO! Glad to see you finally getting a little bit of the love you deserve. YOU ARE A GENIUS SIR and I feel very privileged to know you !!! Keep It Movin.

Produced in its entirety by my favorite producer; Ro BlvdA LOVE SUPREME is a super fresh serving of some great west coast hip hop! The tape has appearances from my other friend Free Speech, Talib Kweli, Evidence, Black Milk, Tunji, Bambu, Shawn Jackson, 6th Sense, and more. A couple gems produced by Ro are on here and some fire from a producer who seams to have a lot of promise named DIBIA$E & others. My joints are “Cali Soul” and “Mainstream Consumers” but over all the whole tape is quite nice. I think hip hop fans of all kinds will enjoy it so I posted a good Megaupload link that I tested and know works. Click on either the front or back Album artwork images below to download the full mixtape for free. Enjoy it my friends…
